Negotiations for Free Trade Agreement Progressing

New Delhi: The Indian government, led by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, is optimistic about finalizing a free trade agreement with Canada by the end of this year.

Goyal is currently in Canada for a three-day official visit that commenced on May 25. He stated, "Our Prime Ministers have directed us to not only finalize the free trade agreement comprehensively before year-end but also to aim for tripling our trade from the current USD 17 billion to USD 50 billion by 2030," during a joint press conference in Ottawa with Canada's Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu.

During his visit, Goyal also met with Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney.

In a social media update, Carney remarked, "We are in the process of negotiating a free trade agreement with India, which will significantly benefit Canadian workers and businesses by opening up a vast new market. We are making swift progress – I met with Minister @PiyushGoyal to assess our advancements and discuss future opportunities in sectors like energy, agri-food, technology, and education."

The two nations are currently engaged in discussions for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with two rounds of negotiations already completed.

The third round is taking place in Ottawa from May 25 to 29.

India's key exports to Canada encompass pharmaceuticals, iron and steel, seafood, cotton garments, electronic products, and chemicals.

Conversely, Canada imports pulses, pearls, semi-precious stones, coal, fertilizers, paper, and crude petroleum from India.

India's primary service exports include telecommunications, computer and information services, along with various business services.

Canada is home to over 425,000 Indian students and boasts a vibrant Indian community. Brij Mohan Mishra serves as the chief negotiator for India, while Bruce Christie represents Canada.
