Enhancing Railway Safety in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: On Tuesday, Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that the introduction of the 'Kavach' system across the 631 km railway network in the East Coast Railway (ECoR) region will significantly bolster passenger safety.

This announcement follows the Indian Railways' recent approval for the implementation of the Kavach system, which involves an investment of Rs 270 crore aimed at improving safety and operational efficiency.

In a post on social media, CM Majhi expressed, "This cutting-edge, locally developed technology will enhance connectivity, foster economic development, and help create a safer and more efficient railway system for the residents of Odisha."

He characterized this initiative as a pivotal advancement for the state's railway infrastructure, emphasizing that it will lead to improved passenger safety, a decrease in accident risks, enhanced train operations, and increased reliability of rail services.

Majhi also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for their efforts in enhancing railway safety.

The 'Kavach' system is an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) technology developed in India, aimed at preventing incidents such as signal passing at danger (SPAD), speeding, and train collisions.

According to officials, this system continuously tracks train movements and automatically engages brakes when necessary, thereby significantly enhancing operational safety.

The project encompasses six key railway sections within the East Coast Railway: Baghuapal-Budhapank, Haridaspur-Paradeep, Khurda Road-Balangir, Naupada-Gunupur, Lanjigarh Road-Junagarh, and Bobbili-Salur.

Additionally, Kavach facilitates safer and more dependable train operations during challenging weather conditions, including heavy fog, which in turn boosts service reliability and punctuality.
