GST Collections Show Moderate Decline in May Yet Remain Higher Than Last Year

In May, the total Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections decreased to Rs 1.94 lakh crore, down from the record Rs 2.42 lakh crore achieved in April. Despite this decline, the revenue was still 3.2% higher compared to Rs 1.88 lakh crore collected in the same month last year, according to official statistics released on Sunday.
The net GST revenue saw a year-on-year increase of 3.3%, reaching Rs 1.67 lakh crore, compared to Rs 1.62 lakh crore in May 2025. Additionally, total refunds rose by 2.6% to Rs 27,281 crore, with cumulative refunds for the current financial year increasing by 10.9% to Rs 59,063 crore.
During the reported month, the gross Central GST (CGST) from domestic transactions was recorded at Rs 37,397 crore, while the State GST (SGST) amounted to Rs 45,143 crore, and the Integrated GST (IGST) totaled Rs 51,990 crore.
According to the official data, GST revenue from imports surged by 19.1% year-on-year to Rs 59,654 crore in May, whereas gross domestic revenue saw a decline of 2.6%, totaling Rs 1.35 lakh crore. On a net basis, customs GST collections increased by 19.7% to Rs 49,403 crore, while net domestic revenue fell by 2.3% to Rs 1.18 lakh crore.
