Government Increases Supply of LPG Cylinders for Migrant Workers

In response to rising demand, the Central Government has mandated an increase in the supply of 5-kg Free Trade LPG cylinders for migrant workers. This decision aims to ensure that these essential resources reach those in need, particularly during peak periods. The government has also reassured the public that there is no LPG shortage in the country, emphasizing stable supply levels and urging against panic buying. With significant sales and distribution efforts underway, the initiative seeks to enhance access to cooking gas for vulnerable populations.

Enhanced LPG Supply for Migrant Labourers

The Central Government has instructed all states and Union Territories to promptly double the distribution of 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders designated for migrant workers. In a communication to chief secretaries, Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal emphasized the need for states to collaborate with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to enhance the supply of these smaller cylinders. The additional cylinders are to be allocated specifically for migrant labourers. This initiative follows the government's observation that the average daily distribution of 5-kg cylinders had surpassed the previously established 20% limit in early March. The objective is to facilitate better access to cooking gas for migrant workers during this peak demand period.

State governments, along with their Food and Civil Supplies departments, have been instructed to monitor the distribution closely to ensure that the cylinders reach the intended recipients.

No LPG Shortage, Assures Government

During an inter-ministerial briefing, Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma categorically refuted any claims of an LPG shortage in the nation. She confirmed that there have been no reports of 'dry-outs' at any petrol stations or LPG distribution points across India. 'All petrol stations are operating normally, and the domestic LPG supply for households remains stable,' she stated. The ministry reported that over 18 crore domestic LPG cylinders have been distributed since March 1. In the commercial sector, 6,500 tonnes of LPG were sold on just one day, Monday. Since March 23, approximately 6.75 lakh 5-kg FTL cylinders have been sold nationwide. Additionally, oil companies have conducted more than 1,300 awareness camps in the past four days, resulting in the direct sale of over 10,000 such cylinders.

Online bookings for LPG have surged to 97%, while deliveries based on Delivery Authentication Codes (DAC) have increased to 90% to curb diversion and black marketing. The government has reiterated its appeal to the public to avoid believing in rumors or engaging in panic buying of cylinders, assuring that the overall LPG supply situation in the country remains stable and well-managed.
