Government Confirms No Immediate Increase in Petrol and Diesel Prices Amid Global Energy Market Changes
No Immediate Price Increase for Petrol and Diesel
The government has announced that there will be no increase in petrol and diesel prices for the time being, despite ongoing tensions in West Asia impacting global energy markets. Reports indicate that cargo movement through the Strait of Hormuz is resuming, which is contributing to an improved energy supply situation in India.
Sources from the government have stated that the energy stock levels in India are strengthening as conditions stabilize, providing greater confidence in the supply chain.
Clarification on LPG Price Hike
Officials reiterated that the previous assurances regarding price stability pertain solely to transport fuels, not cooking gas. In response to criticism from the Indian National Congress regarding recent LPG price increases, government representatives dismissed the claims as unfounded.
They clarified that the earlier statements were specific to petrol and diesel, emphasizing that there was no commitment regarding LPG prices.
India's Strategy for Crude Oil Imports
In an effort to reduce reliance on the Strait of Hormuz for crude oil, India has diversified its sources of crude imports. Reports suggest that the share of crude oil imported from routes outside the Strait has risen from 60% to approximately 70%.
This strategic shift aims to enhance supply security in light of potential disruptions in this critical maritime route.
Concerns Over LPG Supply
Experts have raised concerns that cooking gas may be more susceptible to supply issues compared to crude oil, given India's heavy reliance on LPG imports and limited reserves. As the second-largest LPG importer globally, India depends significantly on shipments that transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
While crude oil reserves can sustain consumption for 30 to 35 days, LPG stocks typically last only two to three weeks. However, government sources have indicated that the situation regarding LPG stocks is improving.
Assurances from Qatar on LPG and LNG Supplies
Government officials have reported that Qatar has committed to resuming LPG and LNG supplies to India once shipping routes are fully operational. Currently, India has surplus LNG stocks, and several nations have offered additional supplies.
Cargo movement in the Strait of Hormuz is gradually resuming following Iran's pledge not to target neighboring countries unless provoked, alleviating immediate fears of significant disruptions in global energy shipments.
Recent LPG Price Adjustments
It is important to note that domestic LPG prices have already seen an increase. As of March 7, the cost of a 14.2-kg cooking gas cylinder rose by Rs 60 across the country. The revised prices in major cities are as follows:
- Delhi: Rs 853 → Rs 913
- Mumbai: Rs 852.5 → Rs 912.5
- Kolkata: Rs 879 → Rs 930
- Chennai: Rs 868.5 → Rs 928.5
Over the past two years, LPG prices have surged by approximately Rs 110 per cylinder. While petrol and diesel prices are expected to remain stable for the time being, experts will continue to monitor cooking gas prices closely due to India's significant dependence on imports through the Strait of Hormuz.
