FSSAI Issues Notices to Swiggy Instamart Over Food Safety Violations

New Delhi, July 11: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued nine formal notices to Swiggy Instamart following consumer complaints that highlighted several violations, as reported by the food regulatory body on Saturday.

In a statement on the social media platform X, FSSAI revealed that the complaints pointed to the delivery of expired, spoiled, rotten, contaminated, and otherwise unsafe food items via the quick commerce service.

Among the significant findings, the authority noted that eggs were allegedly marketed under a brand that does not fall within the product categories authorized by the current FSSAI license. The Food Business Operator (FBO) has been instructed to refrain from marketing this product unless it is covered by a valid license and to seek a modification of the license if necessary.

The notices also referenced complaints regarding products like ‘Healthify 100 per cent Whey Protein 1 kg’ and ‘Noice Homestyle Madras Mixture with Peanuts,’ which were reportedly supplied past their expiration dates.

In another case, an ‘Akshayakalpa Organic Egg’ was found to be expired, rotten, and emitting a foul smell, indicating contamination and making it unfit for consumption.

Similarly, Kakke da Paratha was reported as spoiled and also emitting an unpleasant odor, rendering it unsafe for human consumption.

FSSAI noted that the Food Business Operator did not take any corrective measures despite the escalation of the complaint.

Additionally, an infant food product was discovered in a deteriorated and unsafe state and was reportedly re-supplied to the consumer after the defective item had been returned.

The regulator has now mandated the Food Business Operator to provide a comprehensive explanation regarding the alleged non-compliance and the circumstances surrounding these incidents.

Furthermore, FSSAI has requested details about the company's food safety protocols, quality assurance practices, corrective actions, and measures implemented to prevent future occurrences.

The FSSAI has set a deadline for the company to submit the required explanation and compliance report; failure to do so may result in appropriate actions under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
