FSSAI Halts Sales of Monk Fruit Sweeteners by PIE Foods Due to Violations

FSSAI Issues Prohibition Order Against PIE Foods

New Delhi, Aug 7: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced on Friday that it has issued a prohibition order against PIE Foods, mandating an immediate halt to the sale of its Monk Fruit Extract Sweetener and Monk Fruit Sweetener Drops due to several breaches of licensing and food safety regulations.

The food authority revealed that an inspection revealed PIE Foods was marketing these products without a valid relabeller endorsement on its FSSAI license.

In a statement on the social media platform X, the FSSAI highlighted that the company was operating an e-commerce site lacking the necessary endorsement for e-commerce business in its license.

Furthermore, the FSSAI pointed out that the product labels did not include mandatory declarations and made claims such as ‘100 per cent Monk Fruit Extract’ and ‘Natural Ingredients’.

Additionally, the e-commerce platform of the company featured the claim ‘Doctor Recommended’, which the FSSAI indicated was in violation of the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020, as well as the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018.

Due to these violations, the FSSAI has instructed the company, under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, to cease the sale of the two monk fruit sweetener products until it secures a valid FSSAI Central Licence with the necessary endorsements.

The authority also stated that PIE Foods must obtain the required regulatory approval for the use of monk fruit extract, classified as a non-specified food ingredient under the relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, before it can resume sales.

This prohibition order is part of the FSSAI's enforcement measures to ensure that food businesses adhere to licensing, labelling, advertising, and food safety standards prior to marketing their products to consumers.

Previously, the food regulator had suspended the food business license of Switz Foods Private Limited after discovering significant violations of food safety and hygiene standards during an inspection of its manufacturing facility.
