AI Leadership and Sustainable Business Value

The recent two-day conclave at IIT Mandi focused on the intersection of artificial intelligence and leadership, emphasizing the importance of responsible decision-making and organizational readiness in leveraging AI for sustainable business value.

Held on September 19 and 20, the event, titled AiXcelrate 4.0, was organized by the School of Management and centered around the theme 'Next Gen AI-Leadership: Beyond the Horizon to Monetizing AI.' It gathered industry leaders, professionals, faculty, and students to explore the evolving dynamics between AI, leadership, and business.

Key discussions revolved around three pivotal shifts: transitioning from mere automation to achieving strategic advantages, transforming AI adoption into tangible business growth, and scaling successful pilot projects into sustainable solutions within organizations.

IIT Mandi's Director, Prof. Laxmidhar Behera, emphasized that effective AI leadership must prioritize responsibility and social impact. He noted that merely adopting technology rapidly does not equate to effective leadership, urging that innovation should align with human values and yield meaningful results.

The first day featured a panel discussion titled 'Moving from Productivity and Automation to Strategic Advantage: The AI Value Shift.' Ashley D’Acouza, Chief Data Officer at Hindustan Coca-Cola, warned that simply having access to AI does not guarantee a competitive edge. He highlighted that many organizations are still in the experimental phase with AI, and its success hinges on leadership, strategic vision, and alignment with business objectives.

The day also included mentoring sessions and interactions between industry and academia, culminating in HimTarang – a cultural evening showcasing performances by the IIT Mandi community.

On the second day, the focus shifted to assessing organizational AI maturity and its measurable business outcomes. A panel discussion titled 'Moving from AI Adoption to AI Advantage: Accelerating Growth' explored AI's impact on customer acquisition, personalization, innovation, decision-making, and revenue enhancement.

Rohit Kilam, Chief Technology Officer at HDFC Life, discussed the changing roles of humans and AI, stating that while AI will increasingly take on verifiable tasks, areas requiring judgment and interpretation will still necessitate human input.

Another panel, 'Moving from Pilot to Profit: Scaling AI,' addressed critical aspects such as data infrastructure, system integration, governance, workforce readiness, costs, and the need for human oversight.

An Industry Case Competition, sponsored by 6D Technologies, challenged MBA and Integrated MBA students to devise solutions for real-world business challenges. Team Tactical Minds emerged as the winner, while The Case Solvers and The InsightX secured the first and second runner-up positions, respectively.

Prof. Anjan K. Swain concluded that the impact of AI on business can be evaluated through its scope, speed, and scale. The conclave highlighted that future success will depend on how organizations lead, govern, integrate, and scale AI, rather than merely the speed of its adoption.
