For the Assessment Year 2026-27 (Financial Year 2025-26), the deadlines are set as follows: July 31, 2026, for individuals using ITR-1 and ITR-2 forms; August 31, 2026, for non-audit returns such as ITR-3 and ITR-4; and October 31, 2026, for businesses that require a tax audit. Below is a summary of the filing deadlines and important considerations for taxpayers before they submit their returns.

Choosing the Right ITR Form Taxpayers have various ITR forms to select from based on their employment status. The ITR-1 form is designated for individuals earning income from salary, one house property, and other sources. If you are an individual or Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) without business income, you should opt for the ITR-2 form. The ITR-3 form is applicable for individuals or HUFs with income derived from business or profession, while the ITR-4 form is for those with presumptive income from business or profession.

Required Documents: To file their ITR, taxpayers must prepare a set of documents, including Form 16 from both current and previous employers if applicable, PAN Card, Aadhaar Card (which should be linked to the PAN), proof of investments such as bank deposits and PPF contributions, a home loan interest certificate, and receipts for insurance premium payments.
