The Fisheries Department has initiated a comprehensive plan to boost both the production and commercial use of the Alsu Carp Farm located in Sundernagar. This plan emphasizes scientific management practices, restoration of water supply, and improved marketing strategies for fish and fish seed.
Om Kant Thakur, the Director and Warden of the Fisheries Department, recently visited the farm to assess its current infrastructure, water resources, rearing capabilities, and production potential. He instructed officials to maximize the use of existing facilities scientifically to enhance overall output.
A significant aspect of the inspection was the restoration of the main water supply line from Alsed Khad, which has been out of service for several years due to damage from natural disasters. The director urged officials to explore options for repairing this line to ensure a consistent water supply, crucial for fish seed production.
Additionally, the department is considering expanding the farm's rearing capacity. The director has tasked the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Mandi with consolidating three damaged rearing ponds into a larger outgrow pond. This strategy aims to optimize the use of current infrastructure and help the farm reach its goal of producing 500 kg of fish along with fish seed.
To enhance the farm's commercial viability, officials are encouraged to investigate the feasibility of home delivery services for fresh fish from Alsu. This initiative aims to provide consumers with high-quality fish directly at their homes while strengthening the local market for fish produced at the farm.
The department also plans to increase outreach efforts to position Alsu as a fisheries resource center for local fish farmers and aspiring entrepreneurs. A detailed awareness program will be launched to inform about fish farming opportunities, farm activities, and available resources for farmers and interested individuals. Digital outreach via social media will further extend the reach of this initiative.
Moreover, the director has instructed officials to place a signboard near the Alsu farm along the Chandigarh-Manali four-lane highway. This signage is expected to enhance the farm's visibility, making it easier for fish farmers, local residents, and tourists to find the facility and purchase fish seed, ornamental fish, and table fish.
These initiatives aim to transform the existing infrastructure at Alsu into a more productive and commercially sustainable fisheries facility while increasing the availability of quality fish and fish seed in the region.
Neetu Singh, the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Mandi, along with other departmental officials, was present during the inspection.
