Domestic LPG Supply Remains Steady Amid Rumors and Increased Demand
LPG Supply Update
New Delhi, Mar 29: The Petroleum Ministry announced on Sunday that the distribution of domestic LPG cylinders is stable nationwide, with over 5.5 million refills completed on Saturday. There have been no reports of shortages at distribution centers.
Additionally, approximately 64,000 free trade 5 kg cylinders were sold that day, indicating a consistent supply.
The industry has seen a rise in online LPG bookings, reaching 94%. To prevent diversion at the distributor level, the implementation of Delivery Authentication Code (DAC)-based deliveries has surged from 53% in February to 84%, according to the ministry's statement.
All refineries are functioning at optimal capacity with sufficient crude oil reserves, and adequate stocks of petrol and diesel are being maintained across the country. Domestic LPG production has also been increased to meet demand. Petrol stations nationwide are operating normally.
The government has encouraged consumers to book LPG cylinders online to minimize visits to distribution centers. Citizens are also advised to consider alternative cooking methods, such as PNG and electric cooktops, while practicing energy conservation.
In light of the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, authorities are taking proactive steps to ensure a steady supply of petroleum products and LPG throughout the country.
The ministry highlighted that rumors have led to panic buying at some retail locations in certain states, resulting in unusually high sales and congestion. It reassured the public that there are ample stocks of petrol and diesel available and urged them not to fall for misinformation.
To combat hoarding and black marketing, authorities have conducted raids in various states and Union Territories. On Saturday alone, around 2,900 raids were executed, resulting in the seizure of approximately 1,000 cylinders.
Officials from public sector oil marketing companies have also performed surprise inspections at over 1,200 retail outlets and LPG distribution centers nationwide to ensure a smooth supply and prevent malpractices. Nearly 480 show-cause notices have been issued to LPG distributors so far.
In related news, two Indian LPG carriers—BW TYR and BW ELM—transporting a total of about 94,000 metric tonnes have successfully navigated the Gulf region and are currently heading to Indian ports.
According to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, BW TYR is expected to dock in Mumbai on March 31, while BW ELM is scheduled to arrive in New Mangalore on April 1.
