New Delhi, Oct 16: On Friday, domestic equity benchmark indices experienced a downturn, influenced by mixed signals from global markets, although information technology (IT) stocks provided some support with gains.
Market Performance
During early trading, the Sensex fell by 0.29 percent, or 221.89 points, reaching an intraday low of 74,093. The Nifty also recorded a decline, hitting an intraday low of 22,942, down 0.24 percent or 55.19 points.
Initially, the Sensex opened slightly higher, up 0.03 percent or 25.47 points at 74,341.08 compared to its previous close of 74,315.61. The Nifty started the session at 23,065.10, reflecting an increase of 0.29 percent or 67.75 points from its last close of 22,997.35.
Sector Performance
In the morning session, sectors such as Nifty IT, Nifty Media, Nifty PSU Bank, and Nifty Metal saw gains of up to 1.59 percent. Conversely, Nifty Oil & Gas, Nifty MidSmall IT & Telecom, and Nifty FMCG experienced declines of up to 0.86 percent.
Additionally, indices for real estate and automotive sectors were also down, while pharmaceuticals, cement, healthcare, and private banking showed slight declines.
Market Insights
Market analysts noted that India has outperformed other markets this week, with the Nifty 50 gaining 668 points over the last three days.
This outperformance is attributed to a weakening AI trade, anticipated significant changes in long-term capital gains (LTCG) taxation in the upcoming budget, and positive outcomes from Q2 results that have exceeded expectations thus far.
Experts highlighted that strong results from major IT firms and optimistic management commentary have led to a notable 9 percent recovery in the IT index, bolstering the Nifty's resilience.
“The Q2 results for sectors such as telecom, banking, automobiles, and metals like copper, aluminum, and zinc are expected to be strong, providing fundamental support to the market,” they stated.
“A significant positive development is the sharp drop in the US 10-year bond yield to 5.07 percent. This, combined with the strength of the rupee, may help mitigate foreign institutional investor (FII) selling to some extent,” the analysts added.
However, they cautioned that FIIs are likely to continue their selling spree as long as the 10-year yield remains above 5 percent and Brent crude prices stay elevated.
While maintaining a target range of 23,200-23,600, analysts anticipate mean reversion movements below 23,070, given the sharp rise in the previous session. They expect buying interest on dips, provided they do not extend beyond 22,780.
Global Market Trends
On the global front, Asian markets traded higher in early hours, reflecting the performance of US markets. The S&P 500 closed up by 0.33 percent after recovering from early losses, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq ended nearly flat, with a slight increase of 0.08 percent.
