Delhi Government Implements New Regulations for Commercial LPG Supply
New LPG Supply Regulations in Delhi
The government of Delhi has rolled out enhanced regulations regarding the distribution of commercial LPG cylinders. Moving forward, businesses and industrial consumers will only receive LPG if they actively pursue a transition to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) where such facilities are accessible. Users of supply services managed by the Food, Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department are now required to either apply for a PNG connection or submit a written commitment to switch to PNG once it becomes available at their premises.
Essential Guidelines:
- Commercial and industrial entities must register with the relevant Oil Marketing Company (OMC).
- In regions with existing PNG infrastructure, they must have submitted an application for a PNG connection.
- For areas lacking PNG availability, a formal commitment to transition once the pipeline is installed is necessary.
- OMCs will conduct at least one document verification to ensure compliance and will relay the information to Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) for expedited processing.
Nevertheless, the government has allowed some leeway. Businesses that require both LPG and PNG for their operations can submit a formal request to the Additional Commissioner of the department, detailing their needs. Oil companies are also permitted to gather such requests and forward them for prompt evaluation.
Reason Behind This Initiative: This initiative is part of the Delhi government's strategy to alleviate the strain on LPG supplies while encouraging the use of cleaner piped natural gas. Additional Commissioner Arun Kumar Jha previously noted that Delhi has approximately 5.6 million domestic LPG connections and emphasized the importance of preventing the misuse and diversion of cylinders. He also mentioned that the PNG pipeline network has now reached every village in Delhi, urging residents to switch whenever feasible.
The department has established a control room to oversee the situation and address complaints. Citizens can report any suspicious activities or LPG diversions through the helplines: 011-23379836 and 8383824659 (available from 9 AM to 7 PM). This recent measure is anticipated to encourage more commercial users to adopt PNG, aiding the government in managing LPG demand amidst ongoing global fuel supply challenges.
