Crude Oil Prices Reach New Heights

Crude oil prices have surged to a new six-week peak, with Brent Crude Oil climbing by 2% to exceed $96 per barrel, while WTI Crude Oil has also crossed the $88 mark. This increase follows a recent escalation in tensions between the US and Iran. Peter McGuire, a global oil expert and CEO of Trading.com in Australia, commented on the situation, stating, "The energy markets reacted strongly, with Brent nearing $97 per barrel. In any negotiation, both parties must be willing to compromise, and currently, there seems to be little inclination to de-escalate. We might see crude oil prices hitting $100 per barrel by the end of this month."

Analysts attribute this rise in oil prices to the United States initiating a new series of strikes against Iran, coupled with attacks by Yemen's Houthis on oil tankers in the Red Sea. The US has conducted its twelfth consecutive night of military operations targeting Iranian positions, as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate. According to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM), the latest military action commenced at 5:30 PM ET, following directives from President Donald Trump. CENTCOM noted, "Today at 5:30 PM ET, US forces initiated further strikes against Iranian military targets as directed by the Commander in Chief. This mission aims to diminish Iran's capacity to threaten civilian mariners and commercial vessels in the region."

In response, Iran's Foreign Affairs Minister, Abbas Araghchi, emphasized Tehran's defense strategy of an "eye for an eye." This statement follows President Trump's warning that American forces would retaliate by targeting Iranian infrastructure, such as bridges or power plants, whenever Iranian forces attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump had previously stated on Truth Social, "From now on, any time the Islamic Republic of Iran fires at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether by missile, rocket, drone, or any other means, the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT." He further indicated that potential targets could include facilities located near or within Tehran's capital city.
