Cognizant Leverages AI to Generate $200 Million in New Business Opportunities

Cognizant has harnessed the power of AI to create an impressive $200 million in incremental sales pipeline by analyzing internal communications. This innovative approach, termed context engineering, allows the IT giant to transform scattered employee interactions into actionable business opportunities. By identifying client needs and proactively addressing potential issues, Cognizant is not only enhancing its sales strategies but also improving internal workforce deployment. This initiative, developed in partnership with a startup co-founded by Rohan Murty, signifies a shift in how organizations can leverage AI for better decision-making and operational efficiency.
 

Innovative Approach to Business Development


Cognizant, a prominent player in the IT services sector, has successfully created an additional sales pipeline worth nearly $200 million by analyzing various forms of internal communication, including employee emails, meetings, and chats. This innovative approach transforms scattered information within the organization into viable business prospects. The company has introduced a system known as context engineering, which utilizes signals from employees interacting with clients across different functions such as sales, delivery, and support to uncover potential opportunities that might not be visible through conventional sales methods.


Chief Executive Ravi Kumar highlighted that this initiative has led to the generation of approximately $200 million in incremental pipeline through a comprehensive analysis of internal communications. This effort is part of Cognizant's larger strategy to enhance context engineering, which aims to compile organizational knowledge and business context for AI applications. Kumar emphasized that this represents a new skill set for businesses, noting that while software engineers traditionally focused on coding for deterministic processes, the current AI landscape necessitates the structuring of organizational context to facilitate better decision-making.


The initiative is being developed in collaboration with Workfabric, a startup co-founded by Rohan Murty, the son of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy.


Understanding the Technology


As explained by the CEO, the AI system evaluates internal interactions to pinpoint business opportunities. For instance, it identified a situation where a client was under pressure to cut engineering costs and was reviewing quality assurance expenditures. Consequently, it suggested that Cognizant's sales teams propose a Quality Assurance (QA) optimization solution to tackle this challenge. Furthermore, the technology is capable of proactively identifying client issues before they escalate, utilizing insights from employees working on accounts worldwide to detect potential project risks and recommend appropriate actions, experts, and customer communications. In addition to sales applications, Cognizant is also implementing this technology for internal workforce deployment.
