Extension of Tenure for CBDT Chairman

In a recent decision, the Union government has prolonged the tenure of Ravi Agrawal as the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) by an additional six months, extending his service until December 2026. Agrawal, an officer from the 1988 batch of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), was initially set to retire on June 30.

An official order from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) confirmed the "reappointment" of Agrawal as Chairman on a contractual basis, effective from July 1, 2026, or until further notice, whichever comes first. This extension is granted under the terms applicable to re-employed central government officials, deviating from the usual Recruitment Rules.

Agrawal took charge as the head of the CBDT, which formulates policies for the Income Tax Department, in June 2024 for a one-year term. His tenure was previously extended for another year in June 2025.
