New Delhi, Oct 30: On Friday, Binance announced the suspension of both deposits and withdrawals as it investigates a significant security breach estimated to affect approximately $570 million.
The leading cryptocurrency exchange revealed that preliminary findings indicate the breach may have stemmed from a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, which potentially allowed an attacker to access a service container and execute unauthorized withdrawal requests.
Binance reassured users that there is no indication of any leak of wallet private keys. The exchange plans to release a comprehensive technical report once the investigation concludes and all facts are confirmed.
In collaboration with blockchain partners, Binance has managed to freeze affected assets, with around $570 million currently secured on-chain.
The exchange confirmed that it will absorb all losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company resources, ensuring that user funds remain protected.
“The total estimated impact is around $570 million. We have collaborated with blockchain partners to secure affected assets, with approximately $570 million frozen on-chain thus far. The crypto platform will also issue an updated ‘Proof of Reserves’ once the remediation process is finalized,” Binance stated.
As a precautionary measure, the exchange has temporarily halted deposits and withdrawals while conducting thorough security checks.
Binance has revoked authorization for the affected addresses and is working with law enforcement and blockchain intelligence agencies to trace and recover the stolen funds.
The exchange emphasized that its teams are diligently working to resolve the situation safely and comprehensively.
“We are collaborating closely with law enforcement to identify these criminals and ensure they face justice,” Binance added.
In the wake of this incident, Bitcoin's value dropped below $30,000, marking its lowest point since September, while other cryptocurrencies also experienced declines amid concerns that this breach could become the largest crypto heist in history, surpassing the $625 million theft in February 2025.
