Air India to Reduce International Flights Amid Financial Struggles
Air India Announces Flight Reductions
Facing financial difficulties, Air India has revealed plans to cut back on its international flights by July. This announcement was made by the airline's CEO and Managing Director, Campbell Wilson, on Friday. In a message to employees, he noted that several flights for April and May have already been reduced. Wilson explained that the significant rise in jet fuel prices, airspace restrictions, and longer flight durations have rendered many international routes unprofitable. According to reports, ongoing conflicts in West Asia have led to airspace restrictions, forcing airlines to take longer routes for various destinations. This situation has resulted in increased fuel consumption and higher operational costs.
Challenging Conditions Persist
Wilson, who has announced plans to step down later this year, stated that the current conditions remain quite challenging. He emphasized that under these circumstances, reducing the flight schedule for June and July is the only viable option. He expressed regret for the inconveniences faced by passengers and crew, hoping for a swift resolution to the situation in West Asia, which would allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen normally and restore operations. It is projected that the Air India group will incur a loss of approximately ₹22,000 crores by the end of the financial year on March 31, 2026.
Selective Flights to Continue
Recently, Air India and Air India Express have received regulatory approval to continue operating a select number of services to and from the West Asia region until further notice. Customers are advised to check the status of their flights on the relevant websites or mobile apps before heading to the airport. Our teams are always available to assist you. Previously, management had urged Air India employees to focus on cost control, improve services, and remain grounded in the reality of the challenging situation.
