Expanding Reach: A Guide to Using UPI for International Payments

Sri Lanka:

Indian travelers can now make QR code-based payments at merchant locations in Sri Lanka using their UPI apps.


Indian visitors can utilize UPI for local payments, while tourists in Mauritius can do the same in India via the Instant Payment System (IPS) app.


Nepali users can initiate bank transfers to India using UPI IDs through mobile banking.


BHIM UPI QR-based payments were introduced in collaboration with the Royal Monetary Authority (RMA) on July 13, 2021.


The Eiffel Tower in Paris now accepts UPI payments, thanks to an announcement by NPCI International Payments Limited in partnership with Lyra.

United Arab Emirates:

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Central Bank of the UAE have signed an MoU to interlink payment and messaging systems, facilitating the integration of India’s UPI service into the UAE's Instant Payments Platform (IPP).


India and Singapore have linked their respective digital payment systems, UPI and PayNow, making cross-border payments easy.
