Vietnam and India Team Triumph at Asia Pickleball Tournament
Victory for Duong and Mehta
In an impressive display of skill, Vietnamese pickleball player Quang Duong teamed up with Indian athlete Harsh Mehta to secure a remarkable victory at the Asia Pickleball Tournament held in Ho Chi Minh City on June 7. The duo triumphed over Hanoi Cup champion Hoang Nam Ly and his partner Nick Khamphi, showcasing their resilience after facing earlier defeats in their respective singles and mixed doubles matches.
Duong, who had previously lost to fellow Vietnamese competitor Phuc Huynh in the men's singles semifinals, and Mehta, who faced a setback in the mixed doubles final, entered the men's doubles final with renewed determination. Their partnership proved effective, as they delivered a strong performance, clinching the title with scores of 21-16, 17-21, 21-17.
The first game was tightly contested, with both pairs struggling to gain a significant advantage. However, Duong and Mehta's experience shone through as they began to control the rallies, effectively communicating and covering the court. Their opponents, Nam Ly and Khamphi, made several errors, allowing Duong and Mehta to take the first game 21-16.
In the second game, Nam Ly and Khamphi demonstrated their tenacity, improving their play and engaging in quick exchanges at the kitchen line, which thrilled the audience. Their enhanced performance allowed them to force a decisive third game by winning 21-17.
As the match reached its climax, both teams were under pressure to avoid mistakes. However, Nam Ly and Khamphi appeared anxious, which disrupted their rhythm. In contrast, Duong and Mehta maintained their composure, gradually taking control of the match. Their patience paid off as they secured the final game 21-17, earning them the championship title.
For Nam Ly, who gained recognition after winning the Hanoi Open against Christian Alshon in April, this tournament was disappointing, as he finished as the runner-up in both the singles and doubles finals.
