Sindarov and Wei Yi Advance to FIDE World Cup 2025 Finals
Sindarov and Wei Yi Secure Final Spots
Uzbekistan's Grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov and China's GM Wei Yi are set to compete in the finals of the FIDE World Cup 2025. Both players triumphed in their semifinal matches through tiebreaks, confirming their spots in the Candidates Tournament, as announced by FIDE on Sunday.
Sindarov's Journey to the Finals
Sindarov, who eliminated GM Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara in the quarterfinals, took a significant step forward by defeating Nodirbek Yakubboev in the first rapid game while playing with black pieces. He forced Yakubboev to resign after 47 moves, nearly promoting his c-file pawn to a queen in a rook-pawn endgame. In the second game, he secured a draw with white pieces, successfully defending against his opponent's attempts to win over 54 moves.
Wei Yi's Victory Over Esipenko
In the other semifinal, Wei Yi demonstrated his rapid game prowess by drawing the first game with black pieces. He then overcame GM Andrey Esipenko in 57 moves while playing with white. Despite facing a challenging position after move 55, where Esipenko had a material advantage, the Russian Grandmaster failed to defend his rook, allowing Wei to seize the opportunity.
Wei Yi Reflects on His Achievement
After his victory, Wei Yi expressed his excitement, stating, "This is the biggest achievement of my chess career. I am very happy about it. I aimed to give my best today. In the final position of the second game, my opponent made a rook blunder. Otherwise, black could have played for a win, and I would have had to settle for a draw. This tournament is lengthy, and perhaps he was fatigued."
Upcoming Matches: Anand Cup Final and Candidates Playoff
Sindarov and Wei Yi will now compete for the prestigious Viswanathan Anand Cup, while Nodirbek and Esipenko will battle for the third and final Candidates spot.
