Real Madrid to Elect New President After Two Decades
Presidential Elections Announced at Real Madrid
In a significant move, Real Madrid is set to conduct presidential elections for the first time in 20 years, following the approval of businessman Enrique Riquelme's candidacy by the club's electoral commission. This decision comes as a response to the long-standing president Florentino Perez facing challenges after a lackluster season without major trophies.
At 79 years old, Perez initiated the election process earlier this month to regain the confidence of club members after two consecutive seasons without silverware, as reported by a sports network.
Riquelme publicly declared his intention to run for president on Thursday and officially submitted his candidacy on Saturday at Ciudad Real Madrid, located in the Valdebebas area of Madrid.
Riquelme expressed optimism, stating, "Today marks a pivotal moment for Real Madrid. After two decades, we will have the opportunity to vote. This candidacy is not against anyone; it is for the benefit of Madrid. We have an exciting vision ahead, and I encourage members to embrace it without fear," he told the press.
Historically, Perez has been elected unopposed in the last five electoral cycles, which took place in 2009, 2013, 2017, 2021, and now 2025.
The electoral commission is expected to announce a voting date within the next two weeks. Recently, Real Madrid concluded their La Liga season with a 4-2 win against Athletic Club, where both Perez and Riquelme were present at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
