Unexpected Earthquake Affects Portugal's Training Camp

On June 9, an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of western Cuba, sending tremors across parts of Florida. This seismic event briefly interrupted the training camp of the Portuguese national football team in Palm Beach Gardens, where Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates are gearing up for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 65 miles northwest of Mantua, Cuba, with its effects felt throughout South Florida, reaching as far north as Orlando.

Coincidentally, England's national team is also in Orlando for a friendly match against Costa Rica scheduled for June 10.

The FIFA World Cup is set to take place from June 11, hosted across the US, Mexico, and Canada. Florida will feature seven matches, starting with a clash between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay on June 15.

In their World Cup preparations, Portugal recently secured a 2-1 victory over Chile in a friendly, with Bruno Fernandes and Goncalo Guedes playing pivotal roles.

Despite Cristiano Ronaldo's substitution at halftime, the team adapted well, showcasing impressive midfield and attacking strategies.

Chile struggled to find their rhythm, while Portugal maintained a structured approach, reflecting their confidence on the pitch even without Ronaldo in the second half.

As the match progressed, the attacking fluidity of Martinez's squad improved, with Fernandes emerging as a key player.

Guedes opened the scoring in the 58th minute, and shortly after, Joao Felix replaced Francisco Conceicao, keeping the attacking pressure on. Bruno's decisive goal in the 75th minute sealed the victory.

Portugal demonstrated their depth in talent, with Diogo Dalot and Pedro Neto contributing pace and width, while Bruno provided essential leadership.

Meanwhile, England's preparations included a narrow 1-0 win over New Zealand on June 6, with captain Harry Kane scoring his 67th goal of the season in a match held in Florida.
