Lucknow Super Giants Eye Leadership Changes After Disappointing IPL Seasons
Leadership Changes on the Horizon for Lucknow Super Giants
The Lucknow Super Giants are contemplating a shift in leadership following two underwhelming IPL seasons. Tom Moody, the Director of Cricket, acknowledged that captain Rishabh Pant has faced significant challenges in his role.
After finishing seventh in the 2025 season, LSG is poised to conclude the 2026 season in either ninth or tenth place, contingent on the final outcome for the Mumbai Indians. Under Pant's leadership, the team has secured just 10 victories out of 28 matches over the past two seasons.
"From a captaincy perspective, he has clearly found it tough, and the results speak for themselves," Moody stated to the media after their seven-wicket defeat against Punjab Kings on Saturday.
"One must question if the pressure is affecting his batting performance. This season has indeed been challenging for us, but we will take time to reflect and evaluate everything thoroughly."
Pant, who was acquired for a staggering Rs 27 crore, has also struggled to make a notable impact with the bat.
Recognized as one of India's most explosive batsmen, the wicketkeeper-batsman had remarkable seasons in 2018, scoring 684 runs at a strike rate of 173.60, and in 2019, where he accumulated 488 runs at a strike rate of 162.66.
However, he has not been able to replicate that success with LSG, managing only 581 runs at a strike rate of 135.74 over two seasons, which is below his career strike rate of 144.18.
Moody's remarks follow Pant's recent loss of the vice-captaincy in Tests to KL Rahul and his exclusion from the ODI squad.
"We certainly haven't met the expectations we set for ourselves. The leadership of the franchise is something we will seriously reconsider for the future," Moody added.
"As with any aspect of the team, we will reflect on this season and make thoughtful decisions, but it appears we may need to initiate a reset."
Despite the disappointing results, Moody chose not to blame any individual player, instead accepting collective responsibility for the team's performance.
"We all share the blame for this disappointing season," he remarked.
"Now is not the time to point fingers at anyone. We all take responsibility, and we need to reflect calmly on the situation, although there are issues that must be addressed, and we will do so."
In the meantime, Punjab Kings ended their seven-match losing streak with a seven-wicket win over LSG, keeping their playoff aspirations alive.
However, PBKS's chances of qualification now hinge on the outcome of Sunday’s match between the Rajasthan Royals, who currently have 14 points, and the already-eliminated Mumbai Indians.
A victory for Rajasthan would elevate them to 16 points, securing the final playoff position and eliminating Punjab from contention.
Captain Shreyas Iyer played a pivotal role, scoring an unbeaten 101, while opener Prabhsimran Singh contributed with 69 runs.
"In these crucial matches, you expect your top players to step up," said PBKS Assistant Coach Brad Haddin.
"These are the games where everything is at stake. The captain had a determined look in his eyes over the past few days; he wanted to be the one to make a difference and turn things around for us, giving us a shot at the finals."
