Gurindervir Singh's Historic Win

Athlete Gurindervir Singh expressed his joy after winning a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle event at the Federation Cup held in Ranchi on Saturday. He made history by becoming the first Indian male athlete to finish the race in under 10.10 seconds, achieving a remarkable national record of 10.09 seconds.

The Importance of Mental Resilience

In an interview, Gurindervir shared his excitement about his performance and his aspirations for future competitions. He emphasized that mental strength was vital for his success, allowing him to maintain focus during the race. "It feels amazing. I hope to train effectively and achieve more in the future. In crucial moments, mental fortitude often outweighs physical strength. I managed to stay mentally strong yesterday, which contributed to my performance," he stated.

Acknowledging Support Systems

Gurindervir attributed his success to the unwavering support from his family, coaches, and support staff. He expressed gratitude towards his parents for their inspiration and motivation, recognized the contributions of his trainers and dietitian, and praised the Reliance Foundation for providing exceptional facilities. He noted, "I owe a lot to many people. My father inspires me, my mother motivates me, and my coach has been instrumental in my training. All my coaches deserve recognition for their belief in me and the excellent training they provided. The Reliance Foundation played a significant role in my success, and my dietitian has also been a great help. My hard work and self-belief, combined with their support, have led to my achievements."

Record-Breaking Performance

At just 24 years old, Gurindervir improved the previous national record by 0.06 seconds, which had been set just a day prior by Animesh Kujur in the semifinals. Interestingly, Gurindervir had briefly held the record himself after clocking 10.17 seconds in the semifinals, only to see Animesh surpass it with a time of 10.15 seconds shortly after. However, Gurindervir's impressive performance on Saturday not only reclaimed the record but also secured both athletes a spot in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where they will represent India in the men's 100m event.

A Historic Day for Indian Athletics

In another remarkable achievement, Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi became the first Indian man to break the 45-second barrier in the 400m, winning at the Federation Cup with a stunning national record of 44.98 seconds. This historic day for Indian sprinting was highlighted by Vishal's achievement, which followed Gurindervir's extraordinary 10.09 seconds in the men's 100m, marking a memorable evening for athletics in Ranchi.
