Viktor Gyokeres Celebrates Sweden's Qualification for FIFA World Cup 2026
Sweden's Journey to the World Cup
In Guadalupe, Mexico, on June 9, Swedish football star Viktor Gyokeres shared his excitement about Sweden's qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026. He reflected on his thrilling 88th-minute goal that secured a 3-2 win against Poland in the World Cup qualification playoff final earlier this year.
Despite a challenging UEFA qualifying campaign where they finished last in Group B without a single victory, Sweden managed to qualify for the World Cup through their UEFA Nations League ranking, as reported by FIFA.
Under the guidance of manager Graham Potter, Sweden triumphed over Ukraine with a 3-1 score in the semi-finals, where Gyokeres showcased his talent by scoring a hat-trick. In the decisive final, he once again made his mark by netting the winning goal in the 88th minute, allowing Sweden to edge past Poland.
This upcoming World Cup will mark Sweden's 13th appearance, as they aim to replicate their best-ever performance on American soil, which was a third-place finish in 1994. After missing out on the Qatar 2022 tournament, Potter is eager to capitalize on Sweden's recent success as they return to the global stage.
As the FIFA World Cup approaches, set to take place from June 12 in the US, Mexico, and Canada, Gyokeres expressed his pride and joy after scoring the crucial goal against Poland. He conveyed his happiness for both himself and his teammates for achieving World Cup qualification.
"I feel incredible and proud. It's a whirlwind of emotions. I'm thankful and truly happy for both myself and the team that we have finally made it to the World Cup. This goal is one of the most significant in my career, if not the most important," he stated, as quoted by FIFA.
Gyokeres described the match as an emotional rollercoaster but emphasized the value of participating in high-stakes games. He noted that contributing to Sweden's victory and securing qualification was an extraordinary experience and a significant confidence boost for him and the team.
"It was a blend of emotions, and certainly a lot to process. However, having such games in your career is fantastic, and being able to perform under pressure is amazing. Winning the game and helping the team in these two matches is a tremendous boost for both me and the squad," he added.
Sweden's group stage matches for the FIFA World Cup 2026 will kick off on June 15 against Tunisia at Monterrey Stadium in Guadalupe, Mexico. They will then compete against the Netherlands on June 20 at Houston Stadium in Texas, followed by their final group match against Japan on June 26 at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
