Ashwin Questions Pant's Decision-Making in Test Matches

Following yet another dismissal between the 80 and 99-run mark, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has raised concerns regarding Rishabh Pant's strategy in Test cricket. He emphasized that the wicketkeeper-batter must enhance his understanding of match scenarios. During the recent Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur, Pant seemed on track for a century but fell short at 81 after attempting a risky shot against Hashmatullah Shahidi, despite fielders being stationed deep. This marked the ninth time in his Test career that Pant was dismissed between 80 and 99 runs, leaving him just 19 runs shy of a century.

Ashwin voiced his disappointment on his YouTube channel, highlighting Pant's recurring failure to convert promising starts into substantial scores. "You’ve been dismissed so many times in the 80s and 90s. It’s hard to find a great Test batter like that. But to play such a shot at 80 is perplexing. After reaching 80, can’t you push for another 20 runs?" he remarked.

While the outcome against Afghanistan was not critical, Ashwin noted that Pant's tendency to take unnecessary risks has sometimes hindered the team's performance. "All players make errors, but the frequency with which he does is disheartening. Having played over 50 Tests, he needs to start adapting to the situation more often," Ashwin added.

Ashwin Labels Pant as 'The Best Test Batter'

This topic has long been a point of discussion between Ashwin and Pant, who shared numerous memorable partnerships. Striking the right balance is tough, as Pant's boldness and creativity have established him as India's finest Test wicketkeeper. Given that the wicketkeeper is struggling with form and confidence in other formats, it may be risky to urge him to temper his game, a sentiment echoed by the Indian team management. Despite his critiques, Ashwin acknowledged Pant's remarkable talent. "He’s genuinely the best Test batter. When he defends, it’s so impressive that even Gavaskar is taken aback. He has ample time, regardless of the ball's speed," Ashwin stated.

Ashwin concluded by emphasizing that successful Test batting hinges on selecting the right moments to attack. While he recognized Pant’s instinctive style, he argued that effective Test cricket relies on making percentage-based decisions rather than opting for low-percentage shots aimed at clearing boundary riders.
