Michael Kasprowicz Praises Rising Australian Pace Bowlers Ahead of T20I Clash
Former Pacer Highlights Future Talent
Gold Coast, Australia - On November 5, former Australian fast bowler Michael Kasprowicz expressed his optimism regarding the emerging pace talents, Xavier Bartlett and Brendan Doggett. He emphasized that he wouldn't dwell on the transition period for Australia's pace attack as seasoned bowlers Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc approach the twilight of their careers.
During a press conference on the Gold Coast, ahead of the fourth T20I match between India and Australia, Kasprowicz shared his thoughts on Bartlett's impressive journey. The young bowler has made a significant impact in white-ball cricket, notably dismissing Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli for consecutive ducks, which left the Adelaide crowd in awe. Kasprowicz remarked, "Watching Xavier's development has been a joy. I recall seeing him as a young player in the squad. With Andy Bichel, a close friend and the bowling coach, guiding him, it’s clear that Queensland continues to produce exceptional fast bowlers."
In his five One Day Internationals (ODIs), Bartlett has claimed 15 wickets at an impressive average of 11.12, including two four-wicket hauls with best figures of 4/17. In T20 Internationals, he has taken 18 wickets in 14 matches, averaging 18.94, with his best performance being 3/13.
Representing Queensland, Bartlett has excelled at the first-class level, taking 94 wickets in 28 matches at an average of 26.62, with a personal best of 5/32.
Discussing the future of the Australian pace attack, which may see changes after the ICC World Test Championship cycle from 2025 to 2027, Kasprowicz stated he wouldn't overanalyze the situation. He believes the Sheffield Shield competition is the best globally, providing players with the opportunity to excel against top-tier opponents in challenging conditions.
"While there is a scientific aspect to training now, today’s players are fitter, stronger, and faster than we were in our time. This is an exciting development, and I have confidence that the emerging talent will shine through," he added.
On Doggett, who has been included in the squad for the first Ashes Test, Kasprowicz noted, "He is not just an athlete; his pace appears effortless. His consistency is crucial for Test cricket success," he concluded.
Despite being uncapped in international formats, Doggett has taken 184 first-class wickets in 49 matches at an average of 26.75, with best figures of 6/15, including eight five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket match.
