What’s Behind Russia’s Invitation to PM Modi for Victory Day Celebrations?

Moscow: The Russian government has officially invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in the May 9 festivities commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory over Germany in World War II, as stated by Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko.

According to Rudenko, preparations are underway for Modi's attendance at the parade on May 9, with the invitation already dispatched. He mentioned, “It’s being worked out, it should be this year. He has an invitation.”

This year, Russia is welcoming leaders from various allied nations to join the Victory Day parade.

The Soviet Army initiated an offensive against Germany in January 1945, culminating in the signing of the Act of Unconditional Surrender on May 9, which marked the end of the war.

Prime Minister Modi last visited Russia in July 2024, marking his first trip in nearly five years. His previous visit was to Vladivostok in 2019 for an economic summit.

During that trip, Modi extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit India.

Putin has accepted this invitation, although the specific dates for his visit remain undisclosed.

The two leaders maintain a close relationship, frequently communicating via phone every few months and meeting in person during international gatherings.
