Melbourne: The High Commission of India in Canberra has reported an incident involving the defacement of the Indian Consulate in Melbourne, which has been brought to the attention of Australian officials. On Friday, the Commission stated that measures are being implemented to safeguard Indian diplomatic and consular facilities and personnel in Australia.

Local news outlets indicated that the Consulate, situated at 344 St Kilda Road, was vandalized with graffiti at its entrance during the early hours of April 10, around 1 AM.

According to a spokesperson from Victoria Police, the graffiti was believed to have been applied overnight, specifically between the nights of April 9 and 10. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.

This act of vandalism is not an isolated event; the Indian Consulate and Hindu temples in Melbourne have previously been targeted, often with anti-India messages. The Indian government has consistently lodged formal protests with Australia, urging prompt action against those responsible.

A member of the Indian-Australian community expressed to local media that such acts are not merely vandalism but serve as intimidation towards their community.

During a State Visit to India in 2023, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was informed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the increasing incidents of vandalism and violence linked to pro-Khalistani groups targeting the Indian diaspora and places of worship in Australia.

Albanese assured Modi that his administration comprehends India's concerns and is committed to taking necessary actions to maintain peace and harmony within their society.
