Trump Slams CBS's '60 Minutes' After Controversial Broadcast
Trump's Outrage Over CBS Coverage
Washington: Following a recent episode of CBS's '60 Minutes' that featured segments on Ukraine and Greenland, President Donald Trump launched a fierce critique of the network, claiming it has lost control and should face severe repercussions for its coverage of him.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed his frustration, stating, "Almost every week, '60 Minutes' mentions the name TRUMP in a derogatory and defamatory manner, but this weekend's broadcast surpasses all previous instances." He urged Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr to impose the harshest penalties for what he termed unlawful behavior.
CBS did not provide an immediate response to Trump's comments.
The president is currently embroiled in a $20 billion lawsuit against '60 Minutes' regarding the editing of an interview with Kamala Harris, a Democratic presidential candidate. Trump alleges that the editing was biased in favor of Harris, a claim that the network disputes. Reports indicate that Trump's legal team and CBS's parent company are in discussions for a potential settlement.
In addition, the FCC, led by Carr, has initiated an investigation into CBS News concerning this matter, which is one of several inquiries involving other major networks like ABC, NBC, PBS, NPR, and the Walt Disney Company.
Despite the ongoing legal disputes, '60 Minutes' has consistently reported on Trump's administration since he began his second term, with correspondent Scott Pelley notably interviewing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the site of a recent Russian attack that resulted in the deaths of nine children.
During the Sunday broadcast, Zelenskyy expressed his intense animosity towards Russian President Vladimir Putin due to the invasion of Ukraine and extended an invitation to Trump to visit Ukraine to witness the devastation firsthand.
Additionally, correspondent Jon Wertheim reported from Greenland, discussing local sentiments regarding Trump's interest in acquiring the territory.
In his social media post, Trump criticized '60 Minutes,' claiming it has transformed from a news program into a 'dishonest Political Operative disguised as News,' and insisted that the network must be held accountable for its actions.
