Devastating Fire in Arpora Village

A catastrophic fire erupted at the 'Birch by Romeo Lane' nightclub in Arpora, Goa, resulting in the tragic deaths of 25 individuals and injuring six others. The incident occurred around 1 AM during a 'Bollywood Banger Night' event, where approximately 100 patrons were enjoying themselves. The sudden outbreak of flames caused chaos, leading to a stampede as people attempted to escape. Unfortunately, some tourists and staff members became trapped in the kitchen while trying to flee, succumbing to smoke inhalation.

Rescue Efforts Hampered by Narrow Exits

Upon receiving reports of the fire, firefighting units rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames, ultimately recovering 25 bodies. However, the rescue operation faced significant challenges due to the nightclub's cramped entry and exit points. The narrow lanes leading to the club prevented fire engines from getting closer than 400 meters.

Eyewitness Account: Palm Leaves Fueled the Flames

An eyewitness, Fatima Sheikh, recounted the panic that ensued as flames erupted. After escaping the club, she observed that the entire building was engulfed in fire. She noted that temporary structures made of palm leaves within the club contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

Government Response and Investigation Initiated

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed profound sorrow over this tragic incident, labeling it a 'very sad day' for Goa and has ordered an investigation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his condolences, stating that his thoughts are with those who lost loved ones. He mentioned that he has spoken with the Chief Minister, who assured that the state government is providing all possible assistance to the affected.

Club Operating Without Permission

Concerns have also been raised regarding the nightclub's operation without proper authorization. Roshan Redkar, the sarpanch of the Arpora-Nagova Panchayat, revealed that the club lacked the necessary permits to operate. A demolition notice had been issued for the establishment, but action was halted by officials from the Panchayat Directorate. He stated that this unfortunate incident will lead to stricter enforcement of regulations against establishments violating the law.
