Joint Press Conference Highlights

During a recent joint press conference in Delhi with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar shared significant updates regarding agreements between the two nations in defense, security, and economic sectors. He announced the renewal of a crucial 10-year defense partnership framework between India and the United States. Additionally, both countries have signed a comprehensive roadmap for 'Underwater Domain Awareness' to monitor underwater activities. Dr. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of incorporating lessons learned from recent conflicts and the 'Make in India' initiative as they advance in the defense sector.

Emphasis on Completing Trade Agreements

On the economic front, Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the urgency of finalizing the draft of an interim trade agreement that would benefit both nations. This agreement is seen as a significant step towards a larger bilateral trade deal, which is anticipated to be discussed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US in February 2025. A team from India recently visited Washington, and there are expectations for a US delegation to visit India soon to further these discussions.

Energy Security for 1.4 Billion People

Addressing energy-related issues, Dr. Jaishankar stated, "Our government's primary responsibility is to meet the needs of our 1.4 billion citizens. Ensuring access to energy and its fair pricing is our main goal. Therefore, we welcome the expansion of energy trade between our two countries in recent months, which includes various supply sources crucial for India's energy security." He also mentioned discussions on nuclear energy cooperation, noting that the passage of the 'Peace Act' in the US has opened new possibilities. A recent American delegation visited India, and there are hopes that collaboration in the nuclear sector will soon materialize.

Accountability in Democracy

During the joint press conference, Secretary Rubio spoke about the importance of democratic values and accountability to the public. He remarked, "When I return to Washington, I must justify every decision to the American people, and the President must do the same. We need to explain why a decision is beneficial for our country. Our counterparts in India face similar responsibilities. This holds true to some extent in every country, but it is especially significant for democracies."

The Importance of Independent Media and Open Investigations

Marco Rubio referenced India's vibrant media landscape, stating, "Democracies have opposition parties and a free, open media. India boasts numerous media organizations, which means that everything is scrutinized closely and given due attention. This shared understanding connects our interests. We both recognize that whatever decisions we make or initiatives we pursue together, we ultimately have to justify them to our voters and the public who elected us to these positions."
