Major Earthquake Strikes Off Cuba's Coast
On Monday, a strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale occurred off the northwestern coast of Cuba, while a separate tremor of 5.0 magnitude rattled southern Iran early Tuesday. Residents in both areas expressed concern following these seismic events. The quake near Cuba was felt throughout various regions, including parts of the Caribbean, Mexico, and Florida. Fortunately, officials from both nations reported no immediate significant damage or injuries.
Historic Seismic Activity Near Cuba
The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off Cuba's northwest coast. This seismic activity is considered historically strong and unusual for the area. The quake was shallow, occurring at a depth of 26 kilometers, with its epicenter located approximately 104 kilometers west-northwest of Mantua, a town in western Cuba, which is about two to four hours' drive from Havana.
