President Murmu to Chair NHRC Event on Human Rights Day

New Delhi: On December 10, President Droupadi Murmu will lead a significant event organized by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to honor Human Rights Day, focusing on the theme of 'Dignity for All'.

During this event, President Murmu is anticipated to discuss the importance of responsive governance and effective public service delivery, which are crucial for ensuring justice, liberty, equality, and dignity for every individual.

The event will also feature NHRC Chairperson V. Ramasubramanian and P. K. Mishra, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.

In alignment with the United Nations' theme for this year's Human Rights Day, 'Everyday Essentials', the NHRC will host a National Conference titled 'Ensuring Everyday Essentials: Public Services and Dignity for All'.

Mishra is set to deliver the keynote address at this conference.

According to an NHRC statement, the conference's theme reflects the nation's developmental trajectory, emphasizing that human rights are not merely theoretical concepts but essential elements that influence the quality of life through services like healthcare, education, housing, justice, financial inclusion, and social protection.

The Commission asserts that effective governance and public services are vital for guaranteeing equal access to basic amenities and fulfilling the constitutional commitments of justice, liberty, equality, and dignity for all citizens.

In recent years, India has made significant strides in enhancing access to essential services through various initiatives, including PM Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission, Ujjwala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra, Ayushman Bharat, National Education Policy, Van Bandhu Kalyan Yojana, and the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme.

Nevertheless, these welfare programs require ongoing reinforcement to bridge gaps in access, awareness, and accountability.

The conference will feature two sessions: 'Basic Amenities for All: A Human Rights Approach' and 'Ensuring Public Services and Dignity For All', where domain experts, government secretaries, and senior officials will engage in discussions about these initiatives.

Human Rights Day has been observed annually on December 10 since 1950, marking the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.
