Foundation Laid for New Mosque Amidst Political Controversy

Suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir laid the foundation stone for a new mosque in the Rejinagar area of Murshidabad district on Saturday. Reports indicate that the mosque's design will resemble that of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. The event was heavily secured, reflecting the heightened political atmosphere in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming assembly elections next year.

Reactions from Political Leaders

Various political figures have expressed their views on this foundation-laying ceremony. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury stated that individuals have the right to establish their places of worship. He criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her silence on the matter, especially considering that 70% of Murshidabad's population is from the Muslim community. Chowdhury also mentioned that the High Court has taken cognizance of the issue and directed the government accordingly.

Central Minister Weighs In

Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi commented that there is nothing wrong with constructing temples or mosques, but if such structures are intended to incite 'religious fanaticism,' then it is inappropriate.

BJP's Response to TMC MLA's Political Moves

BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra reacted to Humayun Kabir's statement about contesting elections in alliance with AIMIM. He emphasized that this is a democratic nation, and such actions are permissible. Patra accused both the TMC and Humayun Kabir of engaging in appeasement politics, while asserting that the BJP stands for development-oriented politics.
