MANDI:
During a press conference in Mandi on October 3, 2025, Himachal Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri's comments regarding the reappointment of retired Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena as Chairman of the HP State Electricity Board have stirred significant political discourse in the region.
When questioned by a reporter about the Congress government's decision to repeatedly extend Saxena's tenure, Agnihotri's response was unexpected. Initially, he admonished the journalist, suggesting that as a seasoned reporter, they should know which inquiries are appropriate.
Upon further questioning about his role as Deputy Chief Minister, Agnihotri stated, “I oversee my own departments and can only comment on those.” When pressed on whether he was part of the government, he retorted, “Can you respond to questions meant for your editor?”
A political analyst interpreted Agnihotri's remarks as an indication that he may not have been consulted by Chief Minister Sukhu regarding Saxena's new position, following the conclusion of Saxena's six-month extension as Chief Secretary on September 30, 2025. This could also suggest a possible rift between Sukhu and Agnihotri.
Agnihotri previously served as the Leader of the Opposition during the BJP's term but lost the Chief Ministerial race to Sukhu after the Congress party's victory in the Assembly elections. He is notable for being the first Deputy Chief Minister in Himachal Pradesh's history and has a strong relationship with the party's high command.
Representing Haroli in Una district, Agnihotri is a prominent figure within the Congress party in Himachal Pradesh, known for his strong public connections and respect across the state. He has long been aligned with the Virbhadra Singh faction, while Chief Minister Sukhu has strategically distanced himself from this group.
Occasionally, Agnihotri has hinted at his discomfort with the situation on social media, although he typically adheres to party discipline and the directives of the high command.
