Inauguration of New Sports Infrastructure

On Sunday, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, inaugurated a series of advanced sports facilities at the SAI National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) in Gandhinagar. This initiative underscores the government's dedication to establishing a world-class high-performance sports ecosystem throughout India. The newly launched facilities include a Para Athlete Hostel, a Centralised Dining Hall, a Strength and Conditioning Hall, a Multipurpose Training Hall, and a Meditation Park, all aimed at enhancing athlete preparation through comprehensive support in training, recovery, nutrition, sports science, and mental health.

A Transformational Shift in India's Sports Landscape

While addressing athletes, coaches, and officials, Mandaviya emphasized that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India's sports framework is experiencing a significant transformation, focusing on athlete-centric development and inclusive infrastructure. He remarked, "Prime Minister Modi is indeed the 'Param Mitra' for our para-athletes. His leadership has not only expanded sports facilities nationwide but has also ensured dignity, accessibility, recognition, and equal opportunities for all para-athletes."

India's Growing Presence in Global Sports

Dr. Mandaviya highlighted India's impressive performance on the international stage, noting that the country secured 111 medals at the Asian Para Games and achieved a record 29 medals at the 2024 Paralympics. He stated, "These remarkable achievements are not mere coincidences; they stem from consistent investment in athletes, scientific training, modern infrastructure, and a strong belief in India's potential to emerge as a global sports powerhouse."

SAI Gandhinagar: A Premier Training Hub

The Minister pointed out that SAI NCoE Gandhinagar, designated as a 'Nodal Centre for Para Sports' by the Ministry, is becoming one of the leading high-performance centers for para-athlete training in the country. The center currently supports six para sports disciplines: Para Athletics, Para Badminton, Para Table Tennis, Para Powerlifting, Para Swimming, and Para Fencing, while also facilitating training for Handball, Kabaddi, and Kho-Kho.

Investment in Future Champions

Mandaviya engaged with athletes participating in National Coaching Camps for Kabaddi, Para Sports, Volleyball, and Basketball. He noted that ongoing exposure to elite training environments and scientific support systems would enhance India's chances of winning medals in upcoming international competitions, including the Olympics and Paralympics. He added, "Facilities like the Para Athlete Hostel and the Strength and Conditioning Hall are not just structures; they represent investments in the future of India's champions. These integrated high-performance ecosystems will be crucial for India's journey towards sporting excellence in the years ahead."

Overview of New Facilities

The newly opened Multipurpose Training Hall is set to be primarily used for Kabaddi training, facilitating year-round high-intensity practice, match simulations, and tactical preparations for athletes. The advanced Strength & Conditioning Hall is designed to improve athlete performance, endurance, recovery, and injury prevention through scientific training methods. Mandaviya emphasized that achieving modern sporting excellence requires a holistic approach, encompassing not just physical training but also nutrition, mental health, discipline, and recovery. He noted that facilities like the Meditation Park and Centralised Dining Hall will significantly contribute to creating a comprehensive high-performance ecosystem for athletes.

A Unified Approach to Inclusive Sports

The inauguration event was attended by senior officials from the Sports Authority of India, coaches, athletes, and members of the sports community. Mandaviya further pointed out that the development of the Para Athlete Hostel and Centralised Dining Hall was made possible through financial support from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, highlighting the Government of India's coordinated efforts towards inclusive sports development and the welfare of para-athletes.
