Nagaon Police Uncover Kidney Trafficking Operation in Hoojgaon
Significant Police Operation in Nagaon
Raha, Nov 5: In a significant development, authorities in Nagaon have dismantled a kidney trafficking operation in Hoojgaon village, resulting in the apprehension of three alleged traffickers, as reported by officials on Tuesday.
During a press briefing, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Swapnanil Deka stated that the operation was the culmination of an extensive investigation conducted over several days, revealing a broad network engaged in the illegal organ trade. This racket is suspected to have been functioning in the area for multiple years.
The illegal activities were uncovered during a community awareness event focused on drug abuse and illicit liquor, organized by the Village Women’s Defence Force in Hoojgaon, which prompted the authorities to launch an investigation.
SSP Deka confirmed the arrest of three individuals linked to the gang, identified as Dharani Das alias Bogamula, Mahendra Das, and Deep Das.
During questioning, the suspects reportedly mentioned two additional accomplices — one Hazarika from Baihata Chariali in Kamrup district and Daulagapu from Guwahati — who are believed to be part of the organ trafficking network.
In the meantime, Dipu Das, the headman of Hoojgaon-Kaibarta village, expressed that such unlawful practices have persisted for years, driven by poverty and alcohol dependency.
“Numerous villagers, facing health issues and financial struggles, have been tempted to sell their kidneys for quick cash. In one family, three out of five members had already sold their kidneys,” he disclosed.
He further noted that brokers frequently offered between Rs 3–5 lakh and coerced villagers into traveling to Kolkata to sell their organs.
Das also mentioned that socially conscious villagers who previously protested against the racket are now living in fear due to threats from the trafficking network.
Authorities indicated that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts being made to locate the remaining suspects and dismantle the larger network involved in the illegal kidney trade.
