Is the ED's Chargesheet Against Sonia and Rahul Gandhi a Distraction from Economic Issues?
Congress Responds to ED Chargesheet
New Delhi: On Wednesday, the Congress party asserted that the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) chargesheet against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi serves as a tactic to shift focus away from the ongoing economic turmoil in the nation. They characterized the National Herald case as a thinly veiled act of political revenge.
During a press briefing with senior leader Abhishek Singhvi, Congress communications head Jairam Ramesh accused the government of orchestrating a campaign of harassment and intimidation against the party's leadership.
"For the past two days, we have witnessed a concerted effort of vendetta politics aimed specifically at Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi," he stated.
Ramesh emphasized that this strategy aims to distract from pressing public concerns, including foreign policy and the economic crisis. He pointed fingers at two individuals as the architects of this vendetta.
"We refuse to be silenced. No matter what actions the Prime Minister and Home Minister take, we will continue to voice the people's issues," he declared.
He further claimed that a false narrative is being propagated regarding alleged crimes or money laundering, asserting that the real wrongdoing lies with those behind these accusations.
Singhvi echoed these sentiments, labeling the case as mere legal camouflage for political vendetta.
"Selective justice is merely a form of political intimidation," he remarked, questioning the whereabouts of the alleged proceeds of crime.
"This situation is akin to the eighth wonder of the world; it mocks justice and epitomizes vendetta politics," he criticized, targeting the government.
These statements come in light of the ED's recent chargesheet against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and others, which alleges they were involved in laundering ₹988 crore.
The prosecution's complaint, submitted on April 9 under various sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), identifies Sonia Gandhi as accused number one and her son Rahul Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, as accused number two.
In response to the ED's chargesheet, Congress supporters held a protest outside the All India Congress Committee's office located at 24, Akbar Road, denouncing the actions of the BJP-led Central government.
