Intense Parliamentary Debate on 'Vande Mataram' and Electoral Reforms Ahead

Major Confrontation Expected in Parliament

This week, a significant clash is anticipated in Parliament between the ruling BJP and the opposition led by Congress. Starting Monday, there will be a special discussion on two crucial topics: the national song 'Vande Mataram' and electoral reforms, with participation from MPs across all parties.

Prominent Leaders to Participate in the Debate

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will represent the BJP in the discussions. On the opposition side, key figures such as Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Akhilesh Yadav, and Kanimozhi will express their views during these debates.

'Vande Mataram' Discussion Scheduled

The discussion on 'Vande Mataram' will commence in the Lok Sabha on Monday afternoon, initiated by Prime Minister Modi. Congress will be represented by Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi and senior MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The Rajya Sabha will hold its debate on Tuesday, starting with Home Minister Amit Shah.

Debate on Electoral Reforms

On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha will begin discussions on electoral reforms, which are expected to conclude by Wednesday. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will respond to the debate in both houses.

Anticipation of Heated Debates on Controversial Issues

It is expected that differing opinions on 'Vande Mataram' and electoral reforms will lead to intense debates within the house.

Controversy Surrounding 'Vande Mataram'

Previously, Prime Minister Modi accused Congress of not fully utilizing 'Vande Mataram' to appease a particular group. In response, Congress has accused Modi of distorting facts. They reference a letter from Rabindranath Tagore, suggesting that only the first two stanzas of 'Vande Mataram' should be adopted due to potentially communal sentiments in the later stanzas. 'Vande Mataram', penned by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, holds equal status to the national anthem 'Jana Gana Mana'. This discussion coincides with the 150th anniversary of 'Vande Mataram'.

Opposition's Attack on Electoral Reforms

During the debate, the opposition is poised to raise the issue of 'vote theft'. Rahul Gandhi has already initiated a campaign against 'vote theft', accusing the Election Commission of manipulating electoral rolls to assist the BJP. Opposition MPs will also address the deaths of booth-level officials involved in the Special Intensive Revision. Meanwhile, the BJP may emphasize the need for 'One Nation, One Election'.

Consensus Between Both Sides

This debate was scheduled following the opposition's strong demands. Initially, the opposition insisted on discussing the controversial SIR related to electoral reforms. However, an agreement was reached to also include discussions on 'Vande Mataram' and not limit the electoral reforms debate solely to SIR.
