India's Strong Contingent for Pickleball World Cup

The Indian Pickleball Association (IPA) has officially initiated its selection process to assemble the nation's most formidable team for the upcoming Pickleball World Cup (PWC) 2026. This prestigious event is set to take place in Da Nang, Vietnam, from August 30 to September 6. The selection will encompass all competitive categories, including Open, 50+, 60+, and Juniors, marking a significant effort by India in the sport.

Selection Criteria and Key Events

A crucial aspect of the selection will be the athletes' performances at the IPA National Championships, along with results from various sanctioned events leading up to the Picklebay Zonals. This final qualifying event will serve as the last competitive benchmark before the team is finalized.

Building on Previous Achievements

During the last World Cup held in the United States, India made a remarkable debut, clinching 25 medals (8 Gold, 8 Silver, 9 Bronze) and finishing 7th in the overall medal standings, making it the only Asian nation in the top 10. The selection process for the Vietnam event aims to uphold and enhance this standard.

"This announcement marks a significant milestone for Indian pickleball. Our previous World Cup performance was historic, and we aim to build on that success for Vietnam," stated Suryaveer Singh Bhullar, President of the India Pickleball Association.

Player Evaluation and Commitments

The IPA Selection Committee will oversee the national squad selection through a structured, performance-oriented approach. This will include evaluating past performances in IPA-sanctioned events. Priority will be given to players with top global rankings, ensuring that India is represented by its most competitive athletes in Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. Fitness levels and current match form will also be assessed. Each selected player must sign a Performance Agreement with the IPA, committing to the physical standards required for international competition, adherence to the IPA Code of Conduct, and full medical transparency.

Wild Card Selections

The Selection Committee holds the authority to grant Wild Card selections to players who exhibit exceptional potential or strategic advantages for the team's composition.

Junior Category Trials

For the Junior category, the IPA will host a dedicated selection trial event in Ahmedabad from June 12 to 14. The results from this event, combined with performances throughout the year in IPA-sanctioned competitions, will determine the Junior squad for Vietnam.

Support from Lucknow Leopards

The Indian National Team will receive official backing from the Indian Pickleball League (IPBL) franchise, Lucknow Leopards, for the upcoming World Cup. This franchise will act as the primary supporter for Team India in the Open category, ensuring that the nation's top athletes can compete on an international platform.

This partnership highlights the Lucknow Leopards' commitment to supporting both grassroots and professional pickleball in India. By backing the national team, the franchise aims to connect domestic league success with international achievements.
