A Disturbing Evening at the White House
On Saturday evening, President Donald Trump was inside the White House, having shared on Truth Social just two hours prior that he was engaged in discussions regarding a peace agreement with Iran. However, events outside the western perimeter of the complex soon took a shocking turn.
6:00 p.m. - A Man Approaches the Gate
At around 6 p.m., a gunman was spotted near the west side of the White House. By approximately 6:10 p.m., this individual, later identified by the Secret Service, was seen behaving erratically as he walked up 17th Street Northwest towards the complex.
Shots Fired Near the Perimeter
The situation escalated rapidly when the man brandished a handgun and discharged several rounds in the vicinity of the White House. Witnesses and reporters present reported that the gunfire sounded like it involved a significant number of shots. NBC News correspondent Julie Tsirkin, who was on-site, estimated that between 20 and 30 shots were fired during the incident.
Secret Service Responds Swiftly
The Secret Service reacted almost immediately, returning fire within seconds of the suspect's initial shots, successfully neutralizing him before he could breach the secured area of the complex. Tragically, a bystander was also injured during the exchange, and both the suspect and the bystander later succumbed to their injuries.
Reporters Evacuated to Safety
As the gunfire erupted, Secret Service agents quickly directed journalists working on the White House grounds to evacuate to the North Lawn and subsequently into the press briefing room. An ABC reporter, who was filming at the time, recounted the chaos that ensued as the shots rang out.
Suspect Identified and Hospitalized
Following the incident, the gunman was transported to George Washington Hospital, where he was identified as Nasire Best. Reports indicated that Best was emotionally disturbed and had previously been issued a stay-away order. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed via social media that federal agents were deployed to assist the Secret Service with the ongoing investigation.
Trump Remains Safe
Throughout the ordeal, President Trump remained unharmed. As news of the incident spread, many supporters took to social media to express their relief. The official Republican account on X stated, "Thank God President Trump is safe. Endless gratitude to the Secret Service for their immediate, heroic response. Political violence has to stop." The lockdown at the White House was lifted later that evening, although the investigation into the incident continues.
