Early Life and Family Background

Bachendri Pal was born on May 24, 1954, in a small village named Nakuri in the Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. Her father, Kishanpal Singh, was a modest trader, and her mother, Hansa Devi, supported the family. From an early age, Bachendri excelled in both academics and sports. During a school picnic, she effortlessly climbed to an altitude of 13,000 feet, which ignited her passion for mountaineering.


The Journey to Becoming a Mountaineer

Despite facing financial challenges, she completed her matriculation and went on to graduate, becoming the first woman from her village to achieve this milestone. Bachendri always dreamed of becoming a mountaineer. After earning her degree, she pursued a postgraduate degree in Sanskrit and later obtained a B.Ed. Although her family was not supportive of her mountaineering ambitions, she enrolled in the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering to pursue her passion.


Making History on Everest

In 1984, a team was formed to attempt the ascent of Mount Everest, named Everest 84, which included Bachendri Pal among its members. The team consisted of 11 men and 5 women. After rigorous training, the expedition set out in May 1984. Battling storms, adverse weather conditions, and challenging climbs, Bachendri Pal achieved her historic summit on May 23, 1984, etching her name in the annals of history.
