BCCI Rest Mohammed Siraj for Upcoming T20I Series Against Ireland and England
BCCI Announces Squad Changes for T20I Series
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opted to rest Mohammed Siraj for the forthcoming T20I series against Ireland and England. This decision was revealed during a press conference held on June 6, where BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the squad for India's T20I tour of the UK and the Asian Games 2026.
Shortly after the squad was made public, the BCCI updated the roster, confirming Siraj's withdrawal from both the Ireland and UK series. Prasidh Krishna has been named as his replacement for the T20I series against Ireland, which kicks off on June 26, followed by a five-match T20I series against England starting July 1, 2026.
Siraj, who played a crucial role in India's T20 World Cup title defense earlier this year, was initially included in the squad to bolster the pace attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.
Official Statement from BCCI Regarding Siraj's Rest
The BCCI issued a formal statement explaining the rationale behind resting Mohammed Siraj for the upcoming T20I matches. The board indicated that after consultations with the medical team and team management, it was decided that Siraj would benefit from a period of rest as part of his workload management strategy.
The statement emphasized that this precautionary measure aims to ensure Siraj's adequate recovery ahead of a demanding international season.
"Following discussions between the BCCI Medical Team and the Team Management, Siraj has been advised a period of rest as part of his workload management programme. The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure adequate recovery ahead of a long international season," the statement noted.
Recent Performance and Upcoming Matches
Recently, Mohammed Siraj participated in a One-Off Test series against Afghanistan in Mullanpur, where India achieved a historic victory by an innings and 300 runs, marking the largest margin of victory in their Test history. He is set to return for the ODI series against Afghanistan, commencing on June 13.
Siraj's involvement in the ODI segment of the home series against Afghanistan is vital for India's preparations leading up to the ODI World Cup in 2027, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Importance of Siraj's Recovery Over Participation
Mohammed Siraj has consistently been a key player across all formats for India, making the management of his physical workload a top priority. In the IPL 2026, he played all 17 matches for the Gujarat Titans, including the final against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he bowled 372 balls over 62 overs, taking 19 wickets at an average of 29.57 and an economy rate of 9.06.
In recent years, Siraj has been a workhorse for the Indian team, leading the pace attack across formats with remarkable intensity. Since 2023, he has participated in 74 matches, bowled 1030 overs, and taken 152 wickets. In 2025 alone, he bowled 374 overs, claiming 52 wickets, the highest for any Indian pacer in terms of overs bowled across formats.
During India's Test tour of England last year, Siraj was instrumental, bowling 185 overs and taking 23 wickets, the most by any Indian bowler in that series. His recent performance in the one-off Test against Afghanistan further highlighted his value, prompting management to prioritize his physical longevity.
Future Matches and Workload Management
With Team India scheduled to play 17 ODI matches across five series against Afghanistan, West Indies, England, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka, along with four Tests against New Zealand and Sri Lanka this year, Siraj is expected to lead the bowling unit for the remainder of the year.
By withdrawing Siraj from the high-frequency T20I schedule in the UK, the BCCI aims to prioritize his availability for the more demanding formats. Similar to Jasprit Bumrah, the board has chosen to manage Siraj's workload by reducing his exposure to back-to-back T20I matches, ensuring he maintains his endurance for the upcoming ODI and Test commitments.
