Understanding Devuthani Ekadashi

This year, there is some uncertainty surrounding Devuthani Ekadashi, a major Hindu festival following Diwali. Similar to Diwali, this festival will be observed over two days. According to tradition, it is believed that on this day, Lord Vishnu awakens from his four-month slumber and resumes his role as the caretaker of the universe. This date is regarded as one of the most significant festivals dedicated to the deities in Hinduism. Let's explore when Devuthani Ekadashi will take place this year.

Devuthani Ekadashi 2025: Significance and Celebration Dates

As per Pandit Manish Upadhyay, a ritual astrologer from Karauli, Devuthani Ekadashi will commence on November 1st. The festivities will begin at 9:12 AM on November 1st and will last until 7:32 PM on November 2nd. He notes that the Smarta sect will celebrate on November 1st, while the Vaishnava sect will observe it on November 2nd.

Restrictions During Chaturmas
Upadhyay elaborates that this day marks the end of Lord Narayana's four-month rest, during which he oversees the universe. This period is known as Chaturmas, during which Hinduism prohibits any auspicious activities. It is only after Devuthani Ekadashi that such activities can resume. He emphasizes the importance of this date in Sanatan Dharma, highlighting that it is a sacred festival for the deities, akin to Diwali, which is why it is often referred to as Dev Diwali.

Dress Code for Ekadashi
Pandit Upadhyay advises that on Dashami Tithi, the day preceding Ekadashi, one should limit their food intake, ideally consuming only fruits and milk that evening. This practice is believed to promote good health and ensure a successful fast on Ekadashi. On the day of Devuthani Ekadashi, it is recommended to rise early and take a bath with Ganga water mixed in. Wearing yellow attire is essential, as Lord Narayana has a fondness for this color. Additionally, one should apply tilak to twelve parts of the body and perform worship for Lord Vishnu. Reciting Gopal Sahasranama, Vishnu Sahasranama, and Lakshmi Stotra, along with chanting various kirtans, is considered highly auspicious on this day.
