David Dhawan's Upcoming Film Faces Legal Hurdles Ahead of Release

The anticipated release of David Dhawan's film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai on June 5 is facing significant obstacles. Producer Vashu Bhagnani has raised concerns, alleging that the film's music and themes are taken from his 1999 movie Biwi No. 1. Bhagnani claims that Dhawan's latest project is an unauthorized remake of the original film, which he produced and Dhawan directed. In a recent virtual press conference, Bhagnani expressed his frustrations, stating, “We incurred a loss of approximately Rs 27 crores with Coolie No 1 (2020). I was merely a nominal producer; David handled all production aspects. I compensated him handsomely, around Rs 70 crores, which was beyond his usual worth. During the COVID period, he assured me that any losses would be addressed in the future. We dedicated six months to Biwi No 1, but I later discovered that Ramesh Taurani and Dhawan were collaborating on another project. While I felt disappointed, I realized I couldn't intervene. A year later, I noticed Chunari Chunari featured in that film.”

Despite the controversy, David Dhawan has chosen to remain silent on the matter. However, a source familiar with the situation noted that Bhagnani has a history of legal battles. “He previously took producer Prerna Arora to court and made serious allegations against filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar after Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. Both were eventually exonerated after prolonged legal struggles. It remains to be seen how Bhagnani's dispute with Dhawan unfolds.”

David Dhawan's Legacy in Bollywood

In a significant announcement, filmmaker Karan Johar revealed that David Dhawan is preparing to retire following the release of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, marking the conclusion of his impactful career in Bollywood comedy. Johar, who referred to Dhawan as an “institution,” delivered a heartfelt tribute after attending a festival celebrating Dhawan's contributions to mainstream cinema. The upcoming film features Varun Dhawan and revolves around a comedic love triangle, incorporating popular remixed tracks like Chunari Chunari. Although producer Vashu Bhagnani has voiced ethical concerns regarding the reuse of song visuals, he has not actively opposed the film's release.
