Chhath Puja 2025: A Celebration of Faith and Devotion
Chhath Puja Vrat 2025
Chhath Puja Vrat 2025: The four-day Chhath festival kicks off on Saturday, October 25th, starting with Nahai-Khaai. This significant event is marked by the worship of the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya, especially in regions like Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand. For devotees, Chhath Puja transcends mere celebration; it embodies a deep-rooted faith. Participants undertake a rigorous 36-hour fast without water, praying for the health and prosperity of their families. It is believed that those who observe this fast with sincerity will have their wishes granted by Chhathi Maiya. However, there are instances where individuals may need to break their fast due to exhaustion or health issues, leading to concerns about whether Chhathi Maiya will be displeased or if they will face repercussions for not completing the fast.

On the second day of the Chhath Mahaparva, women observe a Nirjala Vrat (a fast without water) and conclude it on the final day after performing rituals for the Sun God. This festival is regarded as the pinnacle of Sun worship, honoring both the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya (also known as Usha or Pratyusha Devi). The aim is to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit while absorbing the Sun's divine energy. During the Chhath Vrat, devotees offer Arghya (water offerings) at both sunrise and sunset.
Understanding the 36-Hour Fast
36-Hour Fast
The Chhath Puja involves a sequence of rituals: bathing and eating on the first day, fasting on the second, continuing the fast on the third, and breaking it on the fourth day. This practice is believed to eliminate Tamoguna (darkness) from the body and enhance Tejomaya (radiance). If a devotee must break their 36-hour fast, there is no need for alarm. Religious texts provide guidelines for Prayashchit (atonement) in such cases, ensuring the sanctity of the fast is preserved.
What to Do If You Break Your Fast
Do this when your fast is broken.
If you find yourself needing to break your fast, first take a bath and calmly light a lamp in front of Chhathi Maiya. You may say, "Oh Chhathi Maiya, I have unintentionally made a mistake. Please forgive me and allow me to continue my fast." Seeking guidance from elders or a priest and making a donation can also serve as a form of atonement. It's important to dismiss any fears of negative consequences from breaking the fast. Remember, a mother’s love is unconditional, and she only wishes well for her devotees. If you choose not to continue the fast, you can recommit the following day and resume your observance according to the established guidelines.
