Celebrating Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2025: Significance and Rituals
Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2025 Overview
Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2025: This auspicious festival is observed on the Chaturdashi Tithi during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Kartika. It holds great significance for the joint worship of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Devotees honor both Hari (Vishnu) and Har (Shiva) on this day. Scriptures suggest that those who revere Lord Vishnu on this occasion will experience heavenly joy and, upon their passing, will find a place in Vaikuntha Dham, the realm of Lord Hari. This year, the festival is set to take place on October 4th.
Rituals for Vaikuntha Chaturdashi
Vaikuntha Chaturdashi Puja Method
On this day, devotees should rise early during Brahma Muhurta and take a holy dip in the Ganges or another sacred river. Following the bath, they should set up idols of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva together and perform an anointing ritual with Panchamrit (a mixture of five nectars). The Aarti is conducted using Tulsi leaves, lotus flowers, incense, lamps, and offerings. Reciting the mantras "Om Namo Narayanaya" and "Om Namah Shivaya" is particularly beneficial. Lighting a lamp in the evening and listening to the tales of Hari-Har is said to bring great merit. Those observing the fast should refrain from eating all day and consume fruits in the evening.
The Legend Behind Vaikuntha Chaturdashi
The Story of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi
According to legend, Lord Vishnu, the universe's preserver, once traveled to Kashi to worship the Supreme God, Mahadev. He bathed at Manikarnika Ghat and intended to offer 1,000 golden lotuses during his worship. However, Lord Shiva, to test his devotion, took away one lotus. Known as "Pundarikaksha" and "Kamalnayan," Vishnu, realizing he was short of flowers, decided to offer his lotus-like eyes instead.
Impressed by Vishnu's unparalleled devotion, Mahadev appeared and declared, "This day will henceforth be known as Vaikuntha Chaturdashi. Any devotee who worships you with sincerity on this day will reach Vaikuntha."
The Blessing of the Sudarshan Chakra
The Gift of the Sudarshan Chakra
Delighted by Vishnu's devotion, Mahadev gifted him the Sudarshan Chakra, which radiated like millions of suns. Another tale suggests that on this day, Lord Vishnu instructed his gatekeepers, Jai and Vijay, to open the gates of Vaikuntha to all. Anyone who fasts and worships Hari and Har on this day is liberated from the torments of Yamaloka, absolved of their fourteen thousand sins, and ultimately achieves salvation.
