Bhai Dooj 2025 Date

The festival of Bhai Dooj is observed on the second day following Diwali. According to the Hindu calendar, this celebration occurs on the second day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Kartik. Bhai Dooj is also referred to as Yama Dwitiya, which signifies the second day of Yamaraj, the deity associated with death. On this day, Yama is said to have visited his sister, Yamuna, who honored him with a warm welcome. This year, an auspicious Ayushmaan Yoga will coincide with Yama Dwitiya, making it a particularly favorable occasion. Sisters traditionally apply a tilak on their brothers and prepare meals for them, while brothers are expected to visit their sisters' homes for a feast. The auspicious window for applying the tilak this year is limited to just 2 hours and 15 minutes. Let's explore the date and the favorable timings for the tilak ceremony.

Date of Bhai Dooj

As per the Drik Panchang, the Kartik Shukla Dwitiya Tithi begins at 8:16 PM on October 22nd and concludes at 10:46 PM on October 23rd. Based on the Udayatithi, Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on Thursday, October 23rd. This year, the festival occurs two days after Diwali, which can sometimes lead to variations in the dates.

Bhai Dooj with 3 Auspicious Yogas

This year, three auspicious Yogas will be present during Bhai Dooj. The Ayushmaan Yoga will be active from the morning of Bhai Dooj until 5 AM on October 24th, promoting longevity for both brothers and sisters. Additionally, Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga will take place on the second day, from 4:51 AM to 6:28 AM on October 24th, alongside Ravi Yoga during the same timeframe. On Bhai Dooj, Vishakha Nakshatra will be visible from early morning until 4:51 AM the following day, transitioning to Anuradha Nakshatra thereafter.

Bhai Dooj Muhurta

On Bhai Dooj, the Brahma Muhurta is from 4:45 AM to 5:36 AM, which is considered an ideal time for bathing. The Abhijit Muhurta, another auspicious period, occurs from 11:43 AM to 12:28 PM, while Amrit Kaal is from 6:57 PM to 8:45 PM.

Auspicious Time to Apply Tilak on Bhai Dooj

The designated time for applying the tilak on Bhai Dooj is 2 hours and 15 minutes. Sisters will perform the tilak ceremony for their brothers between 1:13 PM and 3:28 PM. Following this, they will serve meals and pray for their brothers' well-being. In return, brothers typically present gifts and express their good wishes to their sisters.

Significance of Bhai Dooj

According to legend, Yamraj's sister, Yamuna, once lamented that her brother never visited her. On Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, Yamraj finally visited her home, where she joyfully welcomed him, applied tilak, and served him a feast. Pleased with her hospitality, Yamraj granted her a wish. She requested that any brother who visits his sister on this day should be free from the fear of death. Thus, it became a tradition for brothers to visit their sisters on Bhai Dooj and receive a tilak from them.
